The word azulejo  is derived from Arabic, meaning “polished stone” because the original idea was to imitate the Byzantine and Roman mosaics; most tiles were polychrome panels depicting allegorical or mythological scenes from the lives of saints or The Bible; Angels are God´s messengers.
